Rural Broadband

Although the main LEADER programme is no longer accepting applications, the issue of rural broadband is something that the LEADER Executive Group are keen to highlight and promote.

The requirement for faster broadband is a need that many villages and communities in the area face.  Whilst the standard ways of receiving a broadband service in remote rural areas are not always possible, some communities are developing their own solutions.

In researching and following developments in this field, the information below has been collated by the LEADER Executive Groups ‘Task and Finish Group on Broadband’, and has been provided here to aid your own knowledge or investigations.

• Nynet - http://www.nynet.co.uk/
  Nynet are a company formed by North Yorkshire County Council and Yorkshire Forward to provide high speed broadband to North Yorkshire.  There is lots of information on the site including case studies on how communities in our area have already done it.

  There are a series of new pages on the NYCC website under the banner 'Connecting North Yorkshire'.  These pages are built around a series of FAQs and are designed to provide information to communities and businesses.

• A report on current interventions by local authorities and communities has recently been published by the Northern Rural Network.  The report draws on case studies of three local authorities (one of which is North Yorkshire) and six community broadband organsisations.
